What should you know about the 5th WIC in Wuzhen?

By Global Business

The fifth World Internet Conference (WIC) kicked off Wednesday in Wuzhen City, east China's Zhejiang Province, with a greeting letter from Chinese President Xi Jinping and a new banquet center to host an additional 3,000 guests for the conference.

Xi sent a greeting letter to the event Wednesday morning with an important message to the Internet and tech sectors that will be the biggest talking points for the rest of the conference.

Many famous leaders from Chinese Internet giants gather in Wuzhen this year, including Alibaba founder Jack Ma, Tencent CEO Pony Ma and Baidu CEO Robin Li. The three leaders come to the WIC every year, suggesting the significance of the conference.

Most of the sector-focused conferences will start tomorrow, including sessions on FinTech, 5G, AI, Cyber-security and the Digital Silk Road. Those sessions will discuss China's significant role in regional digital transformation, anti-cyber-terrorism and regional data and information sharing. That's as China aims to build win-win cyber cooperation with other countries through major mechanisms like the Digital Silk Road project.

Meanwhile, the Light of Internet Exposition held in conjunction with the conference is a focus for visitors. The expo kicked off on Tuesday and demonstrated cutting-edge Internet applications and how technological advancements are reshaping people's daily lives.

Self-driving vehicles, AI-powered translators, VR goggles and high-definition live streaming video enabled by fifth-generation mobile communications technology are all attracting attention at the exhibition.

Analysts say that through WIC, the world will also get to know China's huge achievements in the Internet and technology, digital finance and e-commerce sectors. Moreover, the attendees all recognize China's huge contributions to global cybersecurity, innovation and information sharing. Officials say that the WIC is indeed an opportunity to showcase China's responsibility and commitment to global Internet development.
