At least 16 people, including two children, have been killed after a ferry carrying 139 passengers sank off the coast of Sulawesi island in central Indonesia Tuesday afternoon, AFP quoted a local police spokesman as saying.
A total of 39 people reportedly survived as rescue operation continues, but the total number of passenger trapped in the ferry is not yet known, according to authorities.
Photos posted on social media show dozens of passengers hanging on to the keeling vessel or bobbing in the water wearing life jackets.
Local media reports say the incident took place when water began leaking into the hull during its journey in poor weather which saw strong winds and waves.
Tuesday's incident comes in the wake of another sinking boat incident last month in the country’s Lake Toba which claimed about 200 lives.
