The United Arab Emirates has reopened its embassy in Syria and Bahrain is about to follow suit. It is not the only signal of improving ties between Syria and the Arab world. Earlier in December, the Sudanese president, Omar al-Bashir, became the first Arab League leader to visit Syria in eight years. The visit is widely interpreted as a gesture of friendship on behalf of Saudi Arabia, which has shored up ties with Sudan in recent years.
