The “Battle of the Oranges,” Italy's biggest annual food fight, kicked off Sunday in Ivrea, a town in the northern Italian region of Piedmont.
The carnival this year involves thousands of people and around 500 tons of oranges imported from Sicily.
The origin of the battle is believed to date back to 1,200 AD. According to a legend, the festival commemorates the city's defiance against a tyrant who tried to rape a miller's daughter with oranges representing the head of the tyrant.
The "Battle of the Oranges" is a staple of the annual Carnival of Ivrea, which runs from March 3 to 5 this year.
