The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Monday announced the semi-finalists' shortlists in nine categories, giving the selected ones hope before the nominees were revealed on January 22.
The nine categories include documentary feature, documentary (short subject), foreign language film, makeup and hairstyling, original score, original song and animated short film.
“Roma” by Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron, winner of the Golden Lion at the 75th Venice International Film Festival, is also on the Academy's list.

Three Asian films also appeared on the list, including Japan's “Shoplifter” by director Hirokazu Kore-eda, which was awarded the Palme d'Or at the 71st Cannes Film Festival, South Korea's “Burning” and Kazakhstan's “Ayka.”
Three Chinese films, “Hidden Man” recommended by the Chinese mainland, “Operation Red Sea” by Hong Kong and “The Great Buddha+” by Taiwan, all failed to enter the final list.
Other entries include Colombia's “Birds of Passage,” Denmark's “The Guilty,” Germany's “Never Look Away,” Lebanon's “Capernaum” and Poland's “Cold War.”
This year, a total of 87 movies were in the running for the 2019 Oscars best foreign language film category. The nominations for the 91st annual Academy Awards will be announced on January 22, 2019.
