Trade negotiations between China and the US have gone on for a while and it’s time for them to come to a conclusion, according to Zhou Wenzhong, former Chinese ambassador to the US.
"When the Vice Premier agrees to return to Washington for more talks, that shows we are quite close to a deal. As a matter of fact, I understand talks at the working level have been going on for quite a while,” he said.
Not only has the high level delegation led by Chinese Vice Premier Liu He traveled to Washington for talks, but the 10th China-US CEO and Former Senior Officials' Dialogue held in Beijing were also parts of the Chinese efforts.
The same signal to alleviate trade tensions has been emitted by the United States.
US President Donald Trump showed he has considered easing up on Chinese telecom giant ZTE with a tweet about the issue on Sunday. The US Chamber of Commerce, representing the American business community, also said that levying punitive tariffs on one another is the wrong answer to the trade disputes.
"The focus must be on opening markets, eliminating subsidies, and ending regulations that are increasingly designed to frustrate competition. Just because there are challenges in a relationship, it doesn't mean that mutually beneficial commercial deals can't be successfully negotiated,” said Thomas Donohue, the president and CEO of the Chamber.
Meanwhile, Zhang Xiaoqiang, the executive director at the China Center for International Economic Exchange, represented some cautious voices on the second round of trade talks. "Because these trade and economic issues are relatively large, we can't expect one or two rounds of discussions to resolve all the problems. We need to identify the priority issues and take reasonable measures to solve them one by one," Zhang said.
