Japanese officials say the revenue of the International Tourist Tax for the entire 2019 fiscal year is estimated to surpass 460 million U.S. dollars. The Japanese government will plow that revenue into projects related to tourism, in order to boost its tourism and economy. But there has been some backlash, with some locals complaining that the system is designed only to benefit tourists and not Japanese citizens.
