Lunch with Warren Buffett – how high was this year's bid?

The bid for lunch with Warren Buffett, the American business magnate reached 3.3 million US dollars, which is short of the record bid, 3.45 million US dollars paid in 2012 and 2016, according to Bloomberg on Saturday.
The auction started May 27 and lasted a week long on eBay, which raises money for the Glide Foundation’s work to help the homeless and people in poverty in San Francisco. The bidder who won the auction remained anonymous.

According to eBay for Charity, the auction started at 25,000 US dollars in the year of 2000. The years of 2012 and 2016 witnessed the highest bid which is 3,456,789 US dollars each time.

The winner is able to bring seven friends to have lunch with Buffet at Smith & Wollensky in New York which has been selected as the site of the Power Lunch with Warren Buffett since 2004 with an exception of 2010 and 2011. In the lunch, the winner can ask Buffett anything, except what he is buying or selling, according to a previous report on CNBC.
In the past, top bidders have included some Chinese businessmen. Zhao Danyang, director of the Investment Manager of Pure Heart Asset Management, got his chance to attend the power lunch with a winning bid of 2,110,100 US dollars in 2008 while Zhu Ye, chairman of the board of directors and general manager of Dalian Zeus Entertainment Co., Ltd, joined the lunch with a winning bid of 2,345,678 US dollars in 2015.
Buffett has raised over 26 million US dollars for the Glide Foundation so far through the annual auctions and the Smith Wollensky Steakhouse also donates at least 10,000 US dollars to the foundation each year.
