Trump tweeted last Friday that he had asked Pompeo not to go to the DPRK at this time because he felt the two sides "are not making sufficient progress with respect to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula."

The statement came just a day after Pompeo said that he has appointed Stephen Biegun as the new special envoy for the DPRK.
Since Trump's summit with the DPRK leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore in June, the two countries have differed sharply on the progress of denuclearization.
The White House is concerned about the DPRK's "slow" progress toward denuclearization, while Pyongyang warned it will not start denuclearizing unless the US takes reciprocal actions, as Washington still maintains sanctions against the DPRK.
However, the US has kept the door open to the visit as Trump said that Pompeo and Biegun will travel to Pyongyang next week "to make further diplomatic progress towards our objective."
