The World Trade Organization (WTO) system has been under pressure recently, given the global trade tensions, and the organization believes there are no winners, Roberto Azevedo, the Director-General of the WTO, told CGTN in an interview after the WTO's seventh review of China's trade policies and practices.
Since China joined the WTO in 2001, its role in the organization has increased and it has made contributions to the international trade, he said.
“Now our system is under pressure, especially in the recent global trade frictions. We are doing our best to make it clear to everyone that trade restrictions will not help anyone. Those who believe in trade restrictions will lose. Those who think they will win, they won't. The WTO is trying to get everyone to understand this point."
“We have been doing our very best to make clear to everyone that these tensions, these restrictive measures, are not going to help anyone. Everybody loses in this scenario. Even those think they win, they don’t.”
