An eight-year-old child was killed and at least nine people were injured, two of them critically, in an explosion in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal Tuesday, Xinhua reported citing local police.

The explosion took place around 9:30 a.m. local time outside a fruit stand on the ground floor of a multi-story building in the crowded northern suburb of state capital Kolkata.

"The explosion killed a minor boy on the spot while nine others, including a woman, have been transferred to a government hospital," said a police official.

It was initially thought the explosion was caused by a gas tank, but later reports indicated that the incident seemed to have been triggered by a bomb.

A probe into the incident is currently underway.
