Travelogue: Escape to Nanping’s most tranquil summit

By Megan Zhang

Trekking through the lush, picturesque forests of the city of Nanping, in east China's Fujian Province, I'm eager to get lost in the sea of towering trees and thick greenery along the climb up Mangdang mountain that awaits me. As I make my way higher up the mountain, I spy rolling hills and verdant flora stretching for miles, as far as I can see.

With few people occupying the area, a meditative stroll beckons, allowing me and the area's relatively few visitors to be alone with the simplicity of the wilderness. Small waterfalls and playful streams wander through the forest alongside me, splashing cheerfully onto rocky terrain and continuing their winding journey through the dense forestry. Amidst the trees and embraced by wilderness, I find a quiet escape from city life, a secluded oasis undisturbed by industry or development, offering the tranquility that can only be discovered in the calm embrace of Mother Nature.

And here's something I ponder as I trek up the mountain: the steps I'm taking are the same ones people took hundreds of years ago when traveling between Fujian and Jiangxi Provinces. Back in the day, travelers had to climb up and over this mountain in order to make their way from one province to the other. That means, not only is the route visually stunning, but it also has plenty of historical significance.

Shortly before dusk, I come across a clearing and find myself in a tiny village. Wandering among the quiet huts, I realize I am the sole audience to an unobstructed view of the setting sun. I watch as the sun slowly disappears behind the hills, a bright red disk fading into the horizon. Everyday worries are far from my mind as I listen to the wind rustle the leaves, far away from city commotion or the sounds of a chirping phone. Sitting on the roof of that mountain, I feel refreshed and rejuvenated after that serene adventure into the quietest, yet most captivating, part of Nanping.
