Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said China hopes the positive momentum on the Korean Peninsula will continue.
She made the comments during a regular press briefing on Friday, in response to a question about a new tactical weapon developed by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
Pyongyang's state media KCNA reported that DPRK leader Kim Jong Un has supervised the testing of a "high-tech" new weapon.
It said the test was successful but did not specify the type of device involved.
Hua noted that the Korean Peninsula issue has gone through positive changes recently thanks to efforts made by relevant parties, stressing China's hope that the momentum could be carried forward.
Earlier in the day, the United States also reacted to the news, with the State Department saying it remains confident that promises made by President Donald Trump and DPRK leader Kim Jong Un at their Singapore summit will be fulfilled.
At Friday's press briefing, Hua also expressed China's support for further engagement and dialogue between the DPRK and the US.
Speaking on the possible second meeting between Trump and Kim next year, Hua said China expects the engagement between the top-level officials of the two countries will be conducive to easing the tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
