China properly handles trade disputes with other members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and supports WTO members to solve their trade disputes within the WTO dispute settlement mechanism, said the country in a white paper on China and the WTO on Thursday.
As of now, China has brought 17 disputes to the WTO. Meanwhile, it has been complained against in 41 disputes, of which 33 has been closed. The number of cases complaining against the US is far more than that against China, indicating the US is used to provoking disputes and not fulfilling its commitments within the WTO.
Under the WTO dispute settlement mechanism, the number of cases involved in the United States is far more than that of China. From this numerical point of view, the United States is used to provoking disputes and not fulfilling WTO commitments.
By lodging complaints in the WTO, China redressed other members’ violation of obligations under the covered agreements and defended its trade interests as well as the authority of WTO rules.
The country also actively defended the cases against it, respected the WTO rulings, and made adjustments to its measures according to the WTO rules. Up to now, none of the complainants has requested for retaliation against China.
China safeguards the effective operation of the WTO dispute settlement mechanism, which has played a vital role in maintaining the predictability of international trade and the stability of the multilateral trading system.
The multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core is the cornerstone of international trade and has been playing a pivotal role in promoting global trade and building an open world economy.
Since China’s accession to the WTO, it has firmly supported the multilateral trading system, participated in all aspects of WTO work. It called upon the WTO to focus more on the concerns of developing members and opposed unilateralism and protectionism.
