On the FOX Sports radio show of Colin Cowherd on Tuesday, Shams Charania from Yahoo Sports said the San Antonio Spurs' all-Star forward Kawhi Leonard may prefer the LA Clippers after LeBron James joined the LA Lakers.
“Where will Kawhi Leonard go?” has been one of the most popular NBA topics this summer. When asked about this, Charania said there’s no absolute fact about either when Kawhi will enter the free-agent market or if he will join the Lakers. The Yahoo reporter also mentioned that if Leonard heads for LA, he is also open for playing for the Clippers.
Charania said he did not think Kawhi is very interested in building a super team with LeBron James since he took the NBA MVP by defeating “King James” in the 2014 NBA Finals. Charania also put the Philadelphia 76ers high on the list of Leonard’s options because the other competitor from the Eastern Conference, the Boston Celtics, already has enough star players.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said previously that the Spurs changed their mind and were willing to trade Leonard to the Lakers, but only through a big package deal. The Lakers’ offer, according to Woj, included Brandon Ingram and a future first-round pick, which though did not seem good enough for San Antonio. According to sports website SB Nation, the Spurs asked for Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, Kyle Kuzma, two first-round picks and two pick swaps for Kawhi.
Woj reported that though LeBron James joined the Lakers, it did not change Leonard’s wish to join the same team. ESPN’s commentator Stephen A. Smith even said that Leonard’s willing to spend the 2018-19 season on the bench so he could opt out of his contract with the Spurs in summer 2019 to become an unrestricted free agent and join the Lakers.

The Lakers had a big plan to chase multiple super stars for the summer 2018 off-season, including LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and DeMarcus Cousins. Though they had James, George remained with the Oklahoma City Thunder while Cousins joined the Golden State Warriors.
Though there were reports about James willing to wait for the team to spend more than a year building up without betting their young assets on a big trade, the Lakers did not stop searching the market. According to Chris Sheridan of GetMoreSports.com, the team’s President of Basketball Operations, Magic Johnson, and General Manager Rob Pelinka were considering a series of deals that included Damian Lillard, John Wall and other all-star players.
