Azulejo is a form of painted tin-glazed ceramic tile work. It is an integral part of Portuguese culture. The word azulejo is derived from Arabic, meaning "polished stone." The tiles are everywhere in Portugal, from churches, to palaces and even train stations. China's influence can be found in some Portuguese tiles. In the late 17th Century, the colors blue and white were fashionable in Portuguese tiles, influenced by imported Chinese porcelain.
