Moon, Kim wrap up summit in DMZ, with pledge to denuclearize

‍Republic of Korea (ROK) President Moon Jae-in and the leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Un held a historic summit on Friday at the border village of Panmunjom.
Kim became the first DPRK leader to set foot on ROK soil in almost 70 years.

The DPRK leader drove back after a sound-and-light show at a farewell ceremony during which he and Moon stood hand-in-hand for several minutes to watch the pictures of their historic handshake and other images captured earlier in the day.

Moon Jae-in hosted an official dinner at the Panmunjom joint security area for the DPRK leader Kim Jong Un after they wrapped up their historic meeting on Friday.
ROK's first lady Kim Jung-sook and Kim's wife Ri Sol Ju who crossed the border on Friday evening also attended the dinner.

Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong Un jointly signed the “Panmunjom Declaration” on Friday.

Both sides agreed to make joint efforts to declare an end to the Korean War, change the armistice into a peace treaty and reaffirmed their commitment to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
The joint statement was made after their historic meeting in Panmunjom.
Alongside this, Moon Jae-in will visit Pyongyang this autumn, said the statement.

Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong Un attended a symbolic tree-planting ceremony on Friday afternoon to commemorate their first meeting.
The pine tree they planted on the military demarcation line (MDL) set in 1953, representing the year when the Korean War armistice was signed.
According to the Blue House, the tree-planting ceremony was designed to symbolize both sides’ wish for peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula.

Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong Un will jointly announce the outcome of the summit after an agreement in working-level talks, ROK press secretary Yoon Young-chan said at a press briefing ahead of the afternoon's talks. 
Yoon said the two leaders had "sincere and candid" talks on denuclearization on Friday morning. 
Yoon added that Kim's wife Ri Sol Ju will attend the banquet dinner this afternoon.

The first round of summit talks between Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong Un ended after nearly two hours. 
The two leaders are having a break for lunch separately and will hold a tree-planting ceremony afterwards. 
Kim Jong Un said he will go to the Blue House in the ROK anytime if he’s invited, a ROK presidential official said at a news briefing shortly after this morning's talks. 
Moon and Kim are scheduled to continue their dialogue before issuing a joint statement on the outcome of the summit.

The first inter-Korean Summit in over a decade began at the Peace House on the Republic of Korea (ROK) side of Panmunjom at 10:15 a.m. local time (0115GMT).
Kim Jong Un is accompanied by a nine-member delegation, including Kim's younger sister Kim Yo Jong and DPRK nominal head Kim Yong Nam, as well as the president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK.
Moon said Kim's visit makes Panmunjom a symbol of peace, not division.
The DPRK leader said a new history has begun and he wishes for “frank” discussions on current issues and for agreements to be reached.

Ahead of the summit, Kim Jong Un wrote a message in a guestbook at the Peace House.
"A new history begins now – at the starting point of history and the era of peace," the message read.

Moon Jae-in held a welcoming ceremony for Kim Jong Un at the ROK side of Panmunjom on Friday morning. 
In front of the Peace House, where the bilateral summit will later be held, the pair jointly inspected a ROK honor guard.

The two leaders smiled and shook hands, after which Kim Jong Un gestured to Moon that they should cross over to the DPRK briefly. They did for a few steps, then held hands as they returned to the ROK side.
