Chinese President Xi Jinping called on the Spanish parliament to play a significant role in boosting political trust and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries on Wednesday.
He made the remarks while addressing Spanish lawmakers during his visit to the country's Senate.
In his speech, President Xi pointed out that both China and Spain have adhered to a path of development that suits their own national realities for prosperity and social advancement.
China's door of opening up will not close, Xi said; instead, it will open even wider.
Confirming that China-Spain ties are facing new opportunities for development, the Chinese president stressed China's willingness to maintain high-level exchanges with Spain and further cooperate with it on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
He encouraged Spanish lawmakers to continue to devote themselves to the friendly ties between China and Spain, and make more contributions.
On behalf of the Spanish Parliament, President of Spain's Senate Pio Garcia-Escudero said China has become Spain's highest-level partner as the Spain-China relationship has entered the best period.
Spain admires the great achievements made by China through its reform and opening up, Escudero noted, adding that Spain is willing to further cooperation with China in bilateral areas and global affairs, fortify exchanges between legislative agencies, and increase the mutual understanding between the people of the two countries.
After the speech, Xi visited the Spanish Senate's library accompanied by Escudero and Ana Pastor Julian - the President of Spain's Congress of Deputies.
