A rescued pilot whale that had beached itself in Sanya City, south China's Hainan Province, died on Monday morning from illness.
The wounded and stranded whale was found to have been suffering from liver damage during its rescue operation on June 7. It was sent to the Institute of Deep-Sea Science and Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the city for treatment.

Professional divers, foreign experts and volunteers from the Blue Ribbon Ocean Conservation Association joined forces to provide the short-finned female pilot whale with medical care.
The whale, which was about 3.2 meters long and weighed 500 kilograms, initially showed signs of recovery after two days of intensive care.

But on Monday, things took a turn for the worse and the whale eventually succumbed to the infection.
