Beijing Wangfujing pedestrian street, one of the city's most prosperous commercial zones with over 100 years of history, will be extended northward for over 300 meters this year, according to Dongcheng District.
The extension will be carried out in stages, depending on the construction of new businesses along the street, and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2019.
The 548-meter long Wangfujing pedestrian street, as part of the 1,818-meter Wangfujing street, will be 892 meters long after construction.

The planned extension of the Wangfujing pedestrian street will offer more public space for entertainment and cultural development, said Lv Hui, deputy director with Wangfujing region's management office.
Lv added that the world's most well-known commercial streets usually balance their street space for pedestrians between 800 meters to one kilometer long.
With the influx of more flagship stores of international brands, Wangfujing region has been seeking to go global while preserving its cultural heritage.
