On March 20, 2003, the US and UK launched an invasion of Iraq. Their joint force comprised 200,000 soldiers, six aircraft carrier battle groups, and more than 1,300 fighter jets, which flew over 40,000 sorties and dropped some 29,000 bombs. No one can forget the reason given by the US for invading Iraq. It was that Iraq had concealed weapons of mass destruction, chemical weapons, nuclear material, and ballistic missiles.
In 2004, a year after toppling Saddam Hussein’s government, the US admitted that it had not discovered any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. It also said that it had not found any evidence of links between Saddam Hussein’s government and Al Qaeda or Osama bin Laden.
So, should the US be held legally culpable for the humanitarian disaster in Iraq? Should the US apologize for violating Iraqi people’s human rights?
