Chinese MMA sensation Zhang "Magnum" Weili (19-1-0) made history by defeating Tecia Torres, a top-10 ranked fighter in the UFC's strawweight division, at UFC 235, which was held at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, on Saturday night.
This was only Zhang's third fight after leaving Kunlun Fight to join UFC in 2018. Magnum edged past Danielle Taylor in UFC 227 on August 4 and dyed the octagon with veteran Jessica Aguilar's blood in the first round of UFC Fight Night Beijing during her win on November 24.
Facing 29-year-old peer Torres, who was No.7-ranked with a 10-3-0 professional record, Zhang fought well in the first two rounds as the experienced opponent kept her at a long distance thanks to her diverse kicks, but at the midway through the third round, Zhang dragged American to the ground and hit her with a barrage of elbows until the end, which sealed the triumph for Zhang.
Although Zhang didn't realize her prediction of a knockout victory, her unanimous decision win is still a big step toward the women's strawweight championship, which is currently held by "Thug" Rose Namajunas.
