The Chinese torpedo found by Vietnamese fishermen was for training purposes and has no specific target, China's Ministry of National Defense responded to the incident on Friday.

According to the ministry, the torpedo, found in sea off the Phu Yen province of Vietnam by a local fisherman, was lost during a Chinese navy training early December in waters off the eastern coast of south China's Hainan Island.

The torpedo, of a general training model, could have floated to Vietnam with the ocean current, said the ministry.
