China's Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB), the longest cross-sea bridge in the world, will be open to traffic on October 24, the administration of the bridge announced on Friday.
Construction of the bridge started on December 15, 2009, and was mostly completed on December 31, 2017.
The main section of the 55-kilometer-long bridge includes 23 kilometers of bridges, 6.7 kilometers of tunnels, and two artificial islands.
The bridge is meant to meet the demand of passenger and freight land transport among the Chinese mainland and its Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions, and to establish a new land transport link between the east and west banks of the Pearl (Zhujiang) River.
Once operational, the three-lane highway will cut down driving time between the three cities from the current three hours to a mere 30 minutes.
