Chinese carmaker BYD launched its electrified transportation solution in the Philippines on Wednesday. The move is aimed at solving the city's traffic congestion by introducing green-energy vehicles and an efficient transportation system.
CMC, one of the largest bus makers in Philippines, signed an agreement with BYD last October to buy the company’s 10 electric buses for the congested capital, Manila.
Government officials said BYD's transportation solutions will bring fundamental changes to the Philippines' public transit system.
“Two key parts in our proposed solutions are reducing air pollution and easing traffic congestion. Our new EVs will gradually replace the old diesel-burning jeepneys. Our sky-rail system will significantly ease the traffic burden,” said Liu Xueliang, general manager of BYD Asia-Pacific region’s sales department.
Sky-rail is a BYD-designed urban monorail transit system, and will soon be launched in the country's Bataan province. In addition to addressing the traffic congestion, the monorail also contributes to a green and environmentally friendly public transport system.
“In Bataan generally, have not so much traffic problem except [in] the inner city. And the sky-rail is perfect for the city. The monorail [runs on electricity]. It means there will be no emissions. So we like the BYD’s solution. It is good for environment,” said Albert Garcia, the provincial governor.
Garcia also stated that a smarter city is necessary for purpose of further industrial and commercial development in Bataan Province.
