NCPA: A giant dome for art lovers

CGTN

Listed as one of the "New 16 Scenic Spots" in Beijing, the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) is an iconic egg-shaped dome floating on the artificial lake, hence its nickname "The Giant Egg."

As a grand arts complex, the NCPA is one of the must-visit destinations in Beijing for art lovers. Be it opera, concert, dance or ballet, its dynamic and rich productions will definitely bring a feast for your eyes and ears.

Located to the west of Tian'anmen Square and the Great Hall of the People near the Forbidden City, the NCPA opened to the public in 2007. In the words of music director of China NCPA Orchestra Lyu Jia, it is "a bit young," but is becoming "one of the most important performing centers in Asia, even in the world."

Lyu is an internationally acclaimed conductor known for his expertise and soul-touching interpretation of symphonies and operas. During the 2018 Opera Festival, the opera "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg," co-produced by the NCPA, the UK's Royal Opera House and Opera Australia, was under his baton, which was performed exclusively down here.

Inside the NCPA, there are four magnificent venues, each serving different purposes with distinctive features. The Opera House, the grandest one, can seat a total of 2,081 audiences. Its cutting-edge staging mechanism and golden color tone make it the most glamorous venue in the NCPA.

The Concert Hall features large-scale symphonies and national music performances. It also houses the biggest pipe organ in the country. Cutting-edge technology has been applied to achieve the best acoustic effect.

Characterized by its color of Chinese Red, the Theatre extends an air of China's traditional atmosphere. It is particularly designed for traditional Chinese theatrical performances with its stalls and three levels of balconies.

The Multi-functional Theatre is a comparatively new and flexible venue that often hosts chamber music, instrumental solo, vocal solo, drama and modern dance.

Aside from these venues, there is a spacious area of public spaces together with cafés and souvenir shops that offer relaxation and leisure.
