Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday met with visiting Russian Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, calling for legislative cooperation between the two countries, adding that China and Russia have never been closer.
Sincere regards to Putin
During their meeting, President Xi asked Matviyenko to convey his sincere regards to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"Last month, President Putin successfully paid a state visit to China and attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Qingdao. We exchanged in-depth views on a series of major issues and reached important consensus," Xi said.
Xi also recalled the first-ever Friendship Medal of China awarded to Putin in June as a highlight concerning the importance and uniqueness of Sino-Russian relations and expressed his expectation to meet with Putin again in South Africa during the upcoming BRICS summit later this month.
Sino-Russian relations: Example for great powers
Xi said Sino-Russian relations have set an example for great powers and neighboring countries.
"This year, both countries have successfully completed their important domestic political agendas, made solid steps on the road to achieving national prosperity and revitalization. China and Russia have laid a sound foundation for maintaining long-term, healthy and stable relations," Xi noted.
Xi encouraged cherishing and maintaining the mature and solid strategic partnership between China and Russia, adding that the two sides should unswervingly deepen comprehensive strategic cooperation, firmly support each other in core interests, actively participate in international affairs and global governance, and make important contributions to world peace and stability.
Full implementation of the various cooperation agreements reached by Xi and Putin and an update on the concept of innovative cooperation were asked during the meeting, aiming to push forward new achievements in various fields to benefit both sides.
Call for legislative cooperation
Xi told Matviyenko that legislative cooperation is an important part of China-Russia relations, hoping the two countries could establish a multi-channel communication platform.
In recent years, the exchange mechanism between their top legislative bodies has provided effective legislative support for the two countries to carry out all-round cooperation.
Xi encouraged the two countries' legislative bodies to give full play to their own advantages and continue to provide support for various cooperation in the fields of governance, supervision and security.
Matviyenko is visiting China from July 3 to 5 at the invitation of Li Zhanshu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the 13th National People's Congress.
