Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou has been confirmed as a Chinese citizen, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) spokesperson said Friday.

"According to the Nationality Law of the People's Republic of China, we are certain about Meng Wanzhou's Chinese citizenship," said spokesperson Geng Shuang, dispelling suspicions over Meng's citizenship.

Geng Shuang also said that China provided Meng Wanzhou with consular assistance and demanded her immediate release. China has made its stance clear, demanding an immediate clarification of the reasons for detention. However, to date, neither Canada nor the U.S. has provided any evidence that the detainee violated the laws of the two countries.

"China has always protected the legitimate rights and interests of foreign citizens in China. Other countries should also abide by Chinese laws and regulations during their stay in China," said Geng when asked whether China will take retaliatory measures.

No wrongdoing by Meng

Huwei denied any wrongdoing by Meng. The Chinese tech giant said in a statement on Thursday that the company complies with all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the U.S., EU and UN.

Meng, chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., was provisionally detained by the Canadian Authorities on behalf of the United States, when she was transferring flights in Vancouver, Huawei said in the statement.
