The visitors can revise the knowledge about Chinese geography when wandering the streets in Qingdao, the coastal city in east China’s Shandong Province. Streets there are named after other Chinese provinces, cities, and counties. /CGTN Photo
The street naming system has something to do with the city’s history. /CGTN Photo
Qingdao was occupied by Germany from 1898 to 1914 and Japan after World War I. At that time, the road names in Qingdao were mostly of German and Japanese origin, such as “William Road” and “Maizuru Road”. /CGTN Photo
In 1922, Qingdao returned to Chinese sovereignty and those “foreign” road names were replaced by the names of Chinese provinces, cities and counties. /CGTN Photo
Some roads are also named after China’s strategic passes, mountains and rivers. /VCG Photo.
