Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday sent congratulatory messages to an international conference on artificial intelligence (AI) and education, stressing the importance of cultivating high-end AI talents.
The conference, being held from May 16 to 18 in Beijing, aims to explore the application of AI technologies in education, according to the Ministry of Education.
AI is an important driving force for leading a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation, Xi said in the message, adding that it is profoundly changing people's lives.
He stressed that it is an important task of education to grasp the global development trend of AI, identify breakthroughs and main directions, and cultivate a large number of high-end AI talents with innovation capability and team spirit.
Xi continued that China attaches great importance to the profound influence of AI on education, actively promotes the integration of AI and education, and aims to develop a more open and flexible education which is equal and suitable for everyone.
China is willing to work with other countries around the globe to focus on the frontier issues of AI development, to explore ideas and measures for education development and innovation, and to build consensus, expand sharing and jointly promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
Co-organized by the Chinese authorities and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the conference is themed on "Planning Education in the AI Era: Lead the Leap," and is expected to provide a platform for participants to discuss the capabilities required in the AI era and the building of educational systems that match the development of AI.
On the same day, Xi also congratulated the opening of the third World Intelligence Congress (WIC) in north China's Tianjin Municipality.
The WIC, slated for May 16 and 19, is themed "Intelligence New Era: Progress, Planning and Opportunity" and includes a series of activities such as forums, exhibitions, competitions, and exceptional experiences.
Driven by new theories and technologies such as mobile Internet, big data, and supercomputer, AI presents new features such as deep learning, cross-border integration, and autonomous control, and it is making a deep impact on economic development, social progress, and global governance, Xi said in the message.
The WIC is held to provide a platform for the exchanges, cooperation and sharing for global AI technology, he added.
