Former WHO director general: China leads the way in infectious diseases control

With world-class medical personnel, China leads the way in infectious diseases control and prevention, Margaret Chan, former director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), said during an interview ahead of the opening of the second session of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) on Sunday.
"In an era of globalization, the infectious diseases can go global just like what economy and people have done. When it comes to severe diseases like SARS, bird flu, as well as Ebola in Africa, every country should have their own established systems to protect against these diseases," she added.
Having dedicated her life to public health, Chan is now playing a new role－member of the CPPCC.
Asked about what China has contributed to global epidemic issues, she mentioned the memorandum signed with the WHO to help people in countries along the Belt and Road, which aims to enhance cooperation for further implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and assisting other developing countries.
Since 2003, China has improved and invested in its health care system and the information system in reporting to the WHO.
Chan also praised China's great contributions to global health over the past years, as well as its drive to improve its people's health.
