To commemorate Europe Day as well as this year being the EU-China Tourism Year, 32 iconic sites in 18 Chinese cities have lit up in the blue of the EU flag. As part of the celebration, Wuhan, the capital city of central China’s Hubei Province, has also seen its famous Yellow Crane Tower turn blue.
Hans Dietmar Schweisgut, the EU ambassador to China, co-launched the event with the consul-general of the French Consulate in Wuhan, the vice consul-general of the British Consulate in Wuhan, as well as officers from the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the deputy provincial governor of Hubei and the vice mayor of Wuhan.

Schweisgut said the purpose of the EU-China tourism year is to increase awareness of the lesser-known cities and destinations to European and Chinese tourists.
During the Chinese Lantern Festival in the beginning of March this year, more than 50 landmarks across 18 European countries also lit up in red – the color of China’s flag – to build a symbolic bridge of light to China.
