The first World Conference on Science Literacy concluded successfully in Beijing on Wednesday. A declaration was issued at its closing ceremony, calling on all stakeholders to work together to build a mechanism for collaboration and exchanges, so as to actively promote public scientific literacy as one of the United Nations' (UN) sustainable development issues for a shared and better future for mankind.
The Beijing Declaration recognizes that science literacy as the intrinsic requirement for an individual's all-round development, the social foundation of a nation's innovation capacity and sustainable development, as well as the intellectual foundation of mutual understanding and peace in human society.
Participants fully understand the mission and responsibilities of improving world public science literacy. They have agreed to promote positive interactions between society and science and technology in their broadest sense, to jointly narrow the gap of science literacy, and to promote universal benefit and fairness persistently.
During the three-day conference, representatives from a variety of international organizations, governmental agencies and science institutes have exchanged ideas on scientific innovation, how to make science more popular, and the relation between scientific literacy and the community of a shared future for mankind.
