US President Donald Trump has said the historic summit with DPRK leader Kim Jong Un could “work out very nicely” as officials from both countries make last-minute arrangements to discuss the differences on how to end a nuclear stand-off on the Korean Peninsula on June 12 and 13.
CGTN senior correspondent Tian Wei sat down with Christopher Hill, the head of the US delegation to the six-party talks, to discuss the mechanism which was established to resolve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, and what the upcoming meeting would mean across the political spectrum.
With differences remaining over what a "denuclearization" would entail, Hill said: "If I could see the best scenario, it would be the DPRK agrees to give up its nuclear ambitions and invites the US to take part in a process that includes other countries who have a direct interest in the whole issue of Northeastern Asia security. Those countries happened to be the countries that are in the six-party process."
Hill explained that the best-case scenario is also having all six countries at a meeting because no one can deal with the nuclear issue without the other nations. He said the problem of security is not an issue for the US or the DPRK alone, as it affects all the countries.
When asked about the worst-case scenario, Hill said he doesn't like to think about the negative, but added: "The worse scenario would be the DPRK says they'll not give up their nuclear weapons, because that puts us in a very difficult situation, somehow we need to make sure that worse scenario does not happen."
