Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday stressed that China and the EU are two independent and core players of the multipolar world, who all advocate multilateralism, the role of the UN and peaceful settlement of international disputes.
Wang made his remarks when meeting with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini on the sidelines of the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Wang told Mogherini that China is willing to coordinate its position with the EU in a timely manner and noted it's two sides' common responsibility for maintaining, consolidating and developing China-EU relations.
In the current context of increasing uncertainty in international relations, the Chinese foreign minister believed strengthening China-EU cooperation will add positive energy to the current world.
He hoped the upcoming Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) can also jointly voice adherence to multilateralism and uphold international law and rules like the UNGA.
Wang noted China welcomes the active participation of the EU in building the Belt and Road.
He added China is willing to actively consider linking Eurasian interconnection strategy with China's Belt and Road Initiative and implement the cooperation plan as soon as possible.
Wang also reiterated China's position on the reform of the World Trade Organization.
Mogherini said that there are broad areas of common interests and cooperation between the EU and China and it is important for both sides to maintain regular communication on strategic issues of common concern.
The EU's side highly appreciates China's constructive position on issues like Iran nuclear issue and agrees that both sides should strengthen unity, close communication, and coordination to jointly safeguard and promote the multilateral process under the current situation.
She also said the EU attaches importance to cooperation with China in promoting interconnection among Eurasia.
The Eurasian interconnection strategy passed last week by the EU is by no means opposed to China's Belt and Road Initiative but is willing to form an interaction with the Belt and Road Initiative, Mogherini stressed.
