A new era in science gets underway as an alliance promoting cross-border science cooperation debuts in Beijing. The Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO) brings together Belt and Road scientists and experts devoted to deepening cooperation for a shared future for mankind. The inaugural event drew some 700 scientific representatives from over 40 countries and regions along the Belt and Road.
The expectations on these industry insiders are high. Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the launching ceremony, recognizing the importance of cooperation in science and technology among countries in building the Belt and Road, improving people's livelihood, promoting development and coping with common challenges. Vice Premier Liu He said he sincerely hoped the alliance can promote a spirit of science when dealing with common concerns. He also looked forward to it steadily growing into an international think tank spawning more young talent.

The alliance has attracted a pool of academies and science institutes from Russia, Chile, Bangladesh, Belgium, Thailand and much more.
Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), as the backbone of the alliance, said their priorities include international science programs on climate change, regional disaster reduction, diseases and health. Bai Chunli, president of the CAS, said ANSO would be committed to promoting regional sustainable development, academic capacity building, cooperation and exchanges in science, technology and innovation.
Other members are also determined to fulfill the organization's objectives together. Alexander Sergeev, president of Russian Academy of Sciences, called on representatives of science to expand cooperation in this area as part of the Belt and Road Initiative. Efforts include creating joint laboratories, research centers, supporting exchanges of scientists and new technologies, responding to modern challenges and introducing innovation.
In the coming days, the newly-established alliance will reportedly follow an action plan that details how to further expand global cooperation and outreach along the Belt and Road.
