Recent years have witnessed the sound development of China-Colombia relations. Earlier this summer, Ivan Duque was elected Colombia's new President. His foreign minister, Carlos Holmes Trujillo, chose China as the first stop of his Asia tour this month.
This is also the first visit to China by a Colombian government official since the new government came to power.
Trujillo told CGTN Dialogue that Colombia's relations with China “is very important,” since China is currently the second major destination of Colombian exports, for instance, “in the agriculture sector as a whole, [and] has a huge potential to grow and deepen our mutual relationship.”

He mentioned that Colombia was currently analyzing what role it can play in China's Belt and Road initiative as BRI “is such a huge and important initiative, that we want to make our decision in a deeply consulted way.”

Regarding China's path since its reform and opening-up 40 years ago, Trujillo said, “The road of China in the world is going to be everyday a more important role, because of the population China has, and the economic development China has reached, because of the [role] that China's playing today in science, technology, and [other] new developments.”
He also mentioned Colombia's close relationship with the U.S. as China and the U.S. are experiencing tension on trade issues. But there is no need to take sides between the two as both relationships are of importance and multilateral organizations are fundamental in this global world, he noted.
As for China-U.S. relations, the Colombian Foreign Minister points out that there are more possibilities for cooperation between the two major powers.
