The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday reiterated that "foreign governments should not interfere in any form in the internal affairs of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region" in response to a recent report by the British government.
Hong Kong affairs are China's internal affairs and the British government has no right to make irresponsible remarks and should not interfere with any excuses, spokesperson Geng Shuang told reporters at a regular press conference.
In a report on Wednesday, Britain's Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said he was "concerned that on civil and political freedoms, Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy is being reduced."
In response, Geng urged Britain to "stop interfering in China's internal affairs."
"We ask Britain to face up to the reality that Hong Kong has returned to China for 22 years, and it must respect China's sovereignty and stop publishing such reports and interfering in Hong Kong affairs," he said.
Earlier, a spokesperson for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region said, "Foreign governments should not interfere in any form in the internal affairs" of the city.
