Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called on the whole society to care for and support youth, adding that it is their shared responsibility.
President Xi made the remarks during a speech at a ceremony commemorating the 100th anniversary of the May Fourth Movement at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
"We should all care for and support the growth and development of youth in China and give them more opportunities and let them come into play," said Xi.
Each generation has their own responsibilities, said Xi.
"It's a relay race to build a 'great modern socialist country' and realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. I have the confidence that the young generation will get good results," Xi noted.
At the end of his speech, Xi extended his festival greetings to all the youth across the country in advance.
The movement in 1919, launched by young intellectuals and participated by people from all walks of life, was a great patriotic and revolutionary campaign resolutely fighting against imperialism and feudalism.
In 1949, the new government of China declared May 4 National Youth Day to preserve and develop the spirit of patriotism and democracy of the May Fourth Movement.
