China's state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) of the China Media Group (CMG) announced on Monday evening that its Europe-based journalist Kong Linlin, who had been detained following a scuffle at a Conservative Party event in the UK, has been released with no charges.
The UK police released Kong after briefly detaining her amid stern representations from the Chinese Embassy in the UK and public pressure, a spokesperson for CCTV said.
An attorney said the event organizers handled the incident inappropriately.
Any attempt or action to divide China is futile and against the trend of history, the spokesperson noted.
"We urge the UK side to take concrete steps to protect our journalist's legitimate rights and avoid such absurd incidents from happening again," the spokesperson added.
