Jimmy Butler, who reclaimed his trade request to the Minnesota Timberwolves this week attended his first training session on Wednesday with the team, and it went wrong.
The four-time NBA All-Star led Minnesota's end-of-the-bench players-James Nunnally, Keita Bates-Diop, CJ Williams and Luol Deng-to dominate the first-stringers, specifically, Jeff Teague, Derrick Rose, Taj Gibson, Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Besides defeating his teammates on the court, Butler verbally challenged them. According to Yahoo Sports, Butler kept shouting "they ain't (expletive)!" "They soft!" among other things. At one point when he was guarding Towns who received the ball, Butler yelled "He can't do (expletive) against me!" before Towns passed the ball out.
Though neither Towns nor Wiggins reacted to what he said, unhappy Butler turned his target to the Timberwolves' management by confronting head coach Tom Thibodeau and even general manager Scott Layden. According to Woj, Butler screamed "You (expletive) need me. You can't win without me."

Having left most people speechless, Butler actually admitted what he had done later. "A lot of it is true. "I haven't played basketball in so long. I'm so passionate. I don't do it for any reason but to compete. All my emotion came out in one time. Was it the right way? No! But I can't control that when I'm out there competing. That's raw me, me at my finest, me at my purest. Inside the lines," said Butler In an interview with ESPN.
He even seemed to have confirmed his clash with the young teammates, "Am I being tough on (Towns)? Yeah, that's who am I. I'm not the most talented player on the team. Who is the most talented player on our team-KAT? Who is the most god-gifted player on our team-Wiggs? Who plays the hardest? Me! I play hard. I put my body (on the line) every day in practice, every day in games. That's my passion. Everybody leads in different ways. That's how I show I'm here for you," said Butler.

Though Butler has made it more than clear to Minnesota that he wanted to leave, the team did not appear motivated enough. Their negotiation with the Miami Heat went close to a deal but still fell apart because the Timberwolves again raised the price. When asked if he and the team found a solution to their problems, Butler said: "It's not fixed. Let's be honest. It could be. Do I think so? No."
To a certain extent, Butler even confirmed the rumor of he wanting to leave because not all of his teammates are hungry for victory. "I think that's the part everybody doesn't see. I'm not going to say no names. I'm going to be honest: If your No. 1 priority isn't winning, people can tell. That's the battle. Now there is a problem between people. That's where the disconnect is," said Butler.

It's simply hard to call what Butler did professional or mature. His teammates seemed to agree. Veteran Anthony Tolliver said: "He was around. That's really all I've got to say about that." Point guard Jeff Teague told reporters: "It's not hard. I've been around the league but it's my 10th year so I've been part of teams where a lot of things have been going on. It's part of the game and I don't think it's distracting me, but maybe it's distracting some other guys. Either way, man, I love Jimmy. Jimmy is my guy, but he's not here and we got a good team."
According to ESPN, the Timberwolves on Tuesday reached out to the Houston Rockets after Miami said to their price. Minnesota asked for both Eric Gordon and PJ Tucker which Houston did not accept. "We're not going to give up unreasonable assets, to break up this team, to get Jimmy Butler. But we would love to have him," said the Rocket's owner Tilman Fertitta in an interview with the SB Nation.

It's not rare for ace players of NBA teams to ask to Timberwolves in the past years. Some ended peacefully like Carmelo Anthony and the Denver Nuggets, Kyrie Irving and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Some were not happy but did not turn to yelling and screaming, like Paul George and the Indiana Pacers, Kawhi Leanord and the San Antonio Spurs. What happened between Butler and the Timberwolves was worse than any of the above and certainly will not help either side get what they want.
