After much speculation, US President Donald Trump announced the date and location of his meeting with Kim Jong Un, leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) – June 12 in Singapore.
Inter-Korean relations have turned a new page since the April 27 summit meeting between Kim and President Moon Jae-in of the Republic of Korea (ROK). The meeting, only the third of its kind since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War, also paved the way for a much-anticipated encounter between Kim and Trump.
The details of the meeting were released hours after Trump welcomed three American detainees released by the DPRK, and suggested their release could help the sides work towards an agreement on denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.
Despite the friendly gestures, it is too early to say whether the Trump-Kim meeting will be a success.
The US demands Pyongyang's commitment to "complete" and "irreversible" denuclearization, while the DPRK wants Washington to lift sanctions and address its security concerns.
It remains to be seen how the two leaders will talk about these issues.
