Former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova pretended to shake hands with the umpire, then suddenly attacked umpire’s chair three times with her racket after she loss to Maria Sakkari 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the second round of the Italian Open in Rome on Wednesday.
Both players took one set in hand, and the former world No.1 caught an atrocious call at 5-5 of the deciding set, when Pliskova came to the net and smashed the ball to the right line, which was clearly shown by replays to have bounced a good few centimetres inside the line.
But the line-judge ruled the ball out and then neither they nor the umpire Mrozinska could identify a mark when they were queried by Pliskova. A supervisor has been called but did not solve any problems.
The decision brought up a break point for Sakkari, Pliskova went on to lose that game, and Sakkari served out the match to win 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
