Companies should keep opening up amid trade tension: experts

With the increased fear of China-US trade tension and escalated tariff imposition, business minds point out the advisable path for companies - further opening up and focusing on business development at World Economic Forum (WEF), also known as Summer Davos, in Tianjin.

President Trump's new tariff plan is predictive, said Vivian Jiang, the vice chairlady of Deloitte China. She explained that the president's move is not "healthy or constructive or productive." But Jiang believes that China has a way to manage it.

"I think the public has a way to manage, and China definitely has a way to manage," said Jiang. She added that the businesses should "continue to open up and continue to work with everybody to try to stimulate the economy."

The escalation of trade tension is a downside risk of the global economy, according to Vaughn Barber, the global chair of KPMG's Global China Practice. Barber also suggested companies to focus on their strengths.

"They need to take a long good term view to build reputation and trust in overseas markets, by working more with partners, by creating job opportunities and delivering social benefits locally," said Barber.

Meanwhile, Philipp Gerbert, the senior partner of BCG, expressed that the US is also exerting pressures on Europe, but "Europe is very interested to maintain a good relationship with China."

"German car manufactures exported to China Partly produced in the US. So they are related on China-US relationship in order to work well with China," Gerbert told CGTN.
