He Jiankui, the Chinese researcher at the center of a controversial genetically edited babies case, defended himself at an international summit in Hong Kong on Wednesday.
Despite facing a tidal wave of criticism, He said he is proud of his work.
Scientists have reacted to his claims while speaking with CGTN.
Prof. Wang Haoyi at Chinese Academy of Sciences condemned He, saying "Shame on you! You are part of this anti-humanity crime." Prof. Zhang Linqi, Director of Comprehensive AIDS Research Center, Tsinghua University, echoed with Wang's comment, saying, “Chinese scientists are committed to conduct [the] highest level in scientific ethical research, not to be slurred or shamed or marred by this incident. We will safeguard our scientific legal principals.”
