The young Chinese squad lost 100-88 to title favorites the United States but gained confidence at the 2018 FIBA Women's World Cup on Sunday.
It was the second smallest margin between the two sides at a major tournament, with the US side winning 101-91 at the 1983 version of the tournament.
"What we've gained the most from this match is confidence," said China's head coach Xu Limin.
"We showed the spirit of China's women basketballers to the world. Today's match can testify that if we shrug off our mental burdens and unleash our potential, we can achieve something," Xu pointed out.
American player Breanna Stewart had a game-high 23 points, added by A'ja Wilson's 20 and Tina Charles' 16.
"China played really well. Obviously they competed with us during the majority of the game. Just goes to show what they're doing at this standard, and they're here for a reason too," Stewart commented.
China will face Senegal in final round match of Group D on Tuesday, while the United States take on Latvia. Before that,
China defeated Latvia 64-61 in their opener.
