Former captain of the Chinese women's national soccer team Zhang Ouying passed away on Sunday after losing her battle against lung cancer. She was 43.
The veteran forward participated with the Chinese national team in three successive Women's World Cups – 1999, 2003 and 2007 – and in the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Olympics.
Zhang saw China take the silver medal in the 1999 World Cup as well as in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the best results the Chinese soccer team have ever achieved.

Ever since the 1999 World Cup, the Chinese women's national soccer team has been nicknamed the "Steel Roses," as Zhang and her team members have gained the nation's overwhelming respect and love for their passion, perseverance as well as determination to win during the games.
Since moving to the United States in 2006, she has been devoting herself as a coach and mentor in assisting kids and young adults to play soccer in San Diego.
Earlier this year, she was diagnosed with cancer in both lungs.
