Chinese student killed in armed robbery in Johannesburg

An armed robber attacked eight Chinese overseas students in Johannesburg, killing one of them, Xinhua reported on Wednesday citing the Chinese Consulate-General in the city.
The incident happened on Monday evening as the Chinese students were on a bus returning to their school. One of them was shot dead in the chest, while the others escaped to a nearby police station looking for help.
The Chinese Consulate-General in Johannesburg activated an emergency plan following the incident with officials dispatched to the site. The diplomatic mission asked the local police to use all resources to deal with the case.
China is one of the top 10 inbound tourism markets for South Africa with over 116,900 Chinese tourists visiting the country in 2016, according to the country's national statistical service. This year, 137,000 Chinese travelers are expected to visit the country, the Chinese Embassy is South Africa said on its website.
No travel warning was issued by the Chinese authorities following the incident.
