"We hope to see positive progress in promoting denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and building a peace mechanism on the peninsula. China will continue to play its role in this regard," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang made the remarks at a daily press briefing on Wednesday.
Kim Jong Un, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), released a series of positive signals in his New Year speech by reaffirming his resolution to achieve denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
Lu said that China fully appreciates the measures taken by the DPRK to realize the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and supports the good interactions of the DPRK, the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the U.S..
During last year, important and positive changes happened in the situation on the Korean peninsula, he said, noting that the nuclear issue has returned to the track of dialogue and negotiation.
Lu added that as Chinese President Xi Jinping said in his phone call with the U.S. President Donald Trump on December 29, 2018, China encourages and supports the DPRK and the U.S. to continue dialogue and achieve positive results.
On December 30 last year, Kim sent a letter to ROK President Moon Jae-in, showing his willingness to visit Seoul.
