China banking sector's assets up 7.5 pct

Chinese banks held 254.3 trillion yuan (37 trillion US dollars) in assets as of the end of July, according to data released Monday by the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission.
The volume marked an increase of 7.5 percent year on year, the regulator said.
By the end of last month, lenders' liabilities rose 7.1 percent to reach 233.8 trillion yuan (34.4 trillion US dollars).
The combined onshore assets of China's "big five" lenders - the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of China, China Construction Bank and Bank of Communications - came in at 90.4 trillion yuan (13.3 trillion US dollars), 35.5 percent of the total assets in the industry.
China's more than 130 city commercial banks recorded 32.5 trillion yuan (4.78 trillion US dollars) in total assets, accounting for 12.8 percent of the industry's total.
